Top College Football Games Week 5

3) #7 Stanford at #10 Washington Friday 9pm ESPN

So many of these games in the first 4 or 5 weeks of the season are the “prove it” games. This is definitely one of those games for the Huskies.  Washington has silently moved into the top 10 in the country. But what do we know about this team? Yes they are 4-0 but those wins came at the expense of Rutgers, Idaho, Portland St, and Arizona.

Washington features another one of those young QBs that are lighting the college football world on fire. Jake Browning through four games has 904 yds 14TD and only 2 INTS.  But here comes the Stanford secondary who has only allowed 2 passing touchdowns on the entire season.  Who cracks first Browning or the Stanford secondary?

Is Washington legit? We will know more by late Friday evening.

2) #8 Wisconsin at #4 Michigan 3:30 ABC

Heading into the season not many people were paying attention to Wisconsin. But after wins against LSU at Lambeau and Michigan State people sure are paying attention now.

If you look at that Michigan State game. Wisconsin was outgained, had more penalties but won the very important turnover battle picking off MSU QB Tyler O’Conner 3 times.

Michigan for it’s part has only turned the ball over twice this season.  Safe to say Michigan is legit. Wisconsin? I’m about 95% there with them. I was at 100% but when I look closer at the stats it gives me a little pause.

This game will be close, this will be hard fought, it will come down to defense. Both teams are very good on the defensive side of the ball. We have this image of Michigan’s defense being very stout but Wisconsin’s statistically is better allowing only 80 yards on the ground.  This could be a classic old school Big 10 game.

1) #3 Louisville at #5 Clemson 8 ABC

This is easily the biggest game of the young season.  Louisville is the hottest team in the nation. They has a huge win vs Florida State two weeks ago.  The Cards have an offense that seems to be able to score at will and one of the best young QBs in the country in Lamar Jackson.  But now you have to go to Death Valley…at night..vs the #6 defense in the country.

A lot of questions still surround Clemson. They have not been the dominant team a lot of people thought they would be.  And speaking of young QBs Clemson has a pretty good one in DeShawn Watson. But we’re still waiting for him to have that breakout game. He’s started the season with 1000 yds 9 TDs and 4 INTs.

Much of the talk leading into this game will be about offense.  But it will be the defense that decides this one. Clemson’s defense is ranked 6th in the nation. And Louisville completely shut down Dalvin Cook and Deondre Francois during the Florida State game. Florida State’s defense has 7 picks this season. Louisville 15 sacks on the season.

This is shaping up to be the best game of the young season.
