9 Best Summer Beers For Your July 4th Weekend – Craft Beer Blog

Best Summer Beers…According To Us

Fourth of July weekend is here.  Outside of Christmas it’s my favorite holiday.  I mean what’s not to love, there’s lots of good old American food (preferably on the grill), lots of friends, lots of lawn games, and lots of beer.  Oh right, beer!  An essential part of any good summer party.

That’s why Aaron and I have put together your definitive guide to the best summer beers.  There was only two criteria here, it has to be available in most of this great country (‘Merica!), and it has to be crushable.  In other words you had to be able to suck these down all day at your Fourth of July party.  So here we go…

Founders All Day IPA

Great summer beer and a great IPA!  Low ABV (4.9) lightly bittered (42 IBU) with a great malt to citrusy hop profile.  Super clean refreshing beer allowing you to crush them literally all day, hey the name doesn’t lie. – Aaron

To me this is the standard by which I hold all great summer beers.  There are some that have surpassed this over the years but this is still my go to.  Bitter, clean, floral and just a hint of citrus. Plus, the can just looks cool with the powder blue San Diego Chargers color. – Todd

Southern Tier Hop Sun

Listen, if you put “Sun” in the name of your beer you get some serious consideration to be on a list of the best summer beers.  The fact that it’s somewhat of a hometown beer for us doesn’t hurt either.  Oh and the fact that it’s delicious just solidifies it’s place on this list.  Think of a “light” IPA with a wheat beer base.  The hops are there but not overpowering.  The citrus makes you feel like you’re drinking the summer sun, just without the scorching heat. – Todd

Stone Go To IPA

A super hoppy crystal clear session IPA.  4.8 ABV,  a little more on the bitter side at 65 IBU’s, nice and dry on the finish, a lot grapefruit, orange and resin notes. – Aaron

Oskar Blues Beerito

A super light and drinkable Amber Mexican Lager (like Corona…but for grown ups). 4.0 ABV, 21 IBU’s, very smooth beer with a nice bready flavor, a hint of honey, and a touch of roast.  A ton of flavor for a 4% Lager. – Aaron

Red Stripe

Every time I drink a Red Stripe I think, “why don’t I drink more Red Stripe in the summer”?  It’s pretty much summer all year round in Jamaica so why not trust them when it comes to great summer beers.  Light, refreshing and goes perfect with some grilled seafood or shrimp boil.  Plus, the little stubby bottle looks really cool in your hands. – Todd

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier

I mean come on, everybody knows this classic.  This beautiful golden Hefeweissbier is super hazy and has a very light body.  Loaded with banana and yeast characters, a hint of clove, and with a 5.4 ABV and 14 IBU’s, this beer is always a huge success in summer.  Actually, I might go try and find one now. – Aaron

Allagash White

When I think summer beers the first style that comes to mind is belgian wheat.  And why not have the absolute best.  This is easily in my Top 5 all time beers.  Light, hazy, with just the right amount of bite from the coriander and orange peel.  It checks in at 5.1% ABV, perfectly crushable.  – Todd

Miller Lite

Miller Lite

He’s not really going to put Miller Lite on a list of great summer beers is he?  You bet he is!  Oh I know I’m going to catch a ton of heat from the craft beer snobs…er I mean connoisseurs.  But when it’s 90 degrees out and you’ve just finished working in the yard you want something that you can slam down in one or two gulps.  Actually you can just insert your favorite “macro” beer here.  Yes I love everything about craft beer but during the summer months you’ll find just as many Miller Lites in my fridge as hop bomb IPAs.  So laugh if you must but this deserves a place on my list. – Todd

  3. All nice choices but nothing taste better than a Corona on a hot and sunny day.

  4. I’d argue in favor of land shark and not just because I’m a Buffett fan. More flavor, a little sweeter, no need for a lime but still tastes good with one.
