All Citra Everything Review – Other Half Brewing
You know that feeling when you’re 3/4 of the way through the beer you’re currently drinking and you’re already thinking about what beer you want to drink next? Well, I was only 2 sips into the beer I was drinking with dinner when I realized I was already over it and had mentally moved on and started thinking about the All Citra Everything can that was burning a hole in my refrigerator. I mean I couldn’t just waste the beer I was drinking and pour it out, that’s blasphemous, so I chugged it like any beer lover would do.
All Citra Everything is a single hop Imperial India Pale Ale brewed with all citra hops by Other Half Brewing out of New York City. Brooklyn to be exact. As far as I can tell this particular beer was only brewed as a one-off, and no plans that I can find give me reason to believe they will brew it again, as of now. Except for the fact that they should, because as you’ll find out, it’s amazing. Other Half Brewing is fairly new. According to their website, it was founded in 2014, where they set up shop in Brooklyn to serve the local community. The brewery primarily focuses on brewing craft beers to be served for draft consumption, but it also, in limited quantities and small releases, sells bottles and cans of their beer. Being a newer brewery, and only releasing their bottles and cans in limited quantities, I was super lucky to stumble upon one, seeing that I’m not from NYC and can’t just pack up and road trip. That whole stupid having a job thing gets in the way.
Now I know some of you may think doing a review on a beer that was distributed in limited quantities and may never be brewed again is stupid and pointless, but just in case they ever do brew it again, you’ll already have a head start on what to expect! And to be completely honest, they’d be crazy not to brew it again, because in my opinion it was an absolutely fantastic beer.
So let’s get down to business and let me tell you what I DO know with 100 percent accuracy: what this beer was like to drink.
This beer pours a very hazy unfiltered golden yellow. One thing that I noticed in this beer has a lot of sediment throughout. As soon as it was poured into the glass I could see the hop particles floating around. Don’t let this scare you. It’s perfectly ok. The carbonation level was medium to medium/high, leaving a thick white head that holds on well for the duration of the beer. Let me say this, the citra hop is one of my favorites. The smell was fantastic, wreaking of strong citrus and tropical fruit notes, pineapple, grapefruit, and a hint of lemon. The taste is very crisp and dry. Just how I like my IPA’s. Freshly poured and cold, the strongest flavors I tasted were pineapple and tropical fruits, with very slight bitter on the back end. As the beer grew warmer, I picked up on a fairly heavy bitter and a lot of pineapple. From the first sip to the last the beer had a very thick and heavy citrus character, some tropical fruit notes, and what I thought was a very slight grassy note at the end.
Now just because this beer may be difficult to find, and may not be around again for a while, don’t let that deter you from trying some of Other Half’s beers that they offer! I personally have had a few, the Green Diamonds Double IPA, the Galaxy IPA, and the Mosaic IPA, just to name a few. All were fantastic. Now me telling you to pack up the car on a Friday night and hit the road to Brooklyn, NY would be hypocritical seeing that I have yet to do so, but I’m going to tell you to do it anyway. Pack up your car and make the trip. Now. Just make sure you leave a lot of room to bring beer home. Hell, if you have to leave the wife and get her a bus ticket home to make room for more beer…well, you gotta do what you gotta do. Cheers!
